City of Wellington Fire and Police personnel responded to a structure fire at 816 E. Lincoln at 9:48am Wednesday morning. Flames in the attic and roof area were visible and large amounts of smoke poured from the structure as Wellington Fire Dept. personnel set up several hoses to bring the fire under control. According to Wellington Fire Chief Tim Hay, the damage to the home and the contents are estimated to be $23,000.00 and the "Habitat for Humanity" house next door suffered $1,500.00 damage to it's siding. Upon arrival the fire dept. observed flames through the door and windows on the front portion of the house. Fire spread rapidly throughout the entire structure. Heavy fire, smoke, and water damage resulted throughout the home. Firefighters used several hose lines to bring the fire under control and protect the home to the west. Firefighters did rescue a puppy in the basement and gave oxygen. Owners took the pet to the veterinarian. The occupants did not have renters insurance and the fire department is still seeking the owner to determine if there was insurance on the home. The fire is believed to have been caused by children playing with a lighter. The house is owned by Beverly Walta and 8 tenants (renters) resided at the location. The occupants had no renters insurance - it is unknown what type of insurance the owner may have. There were no working smoke or fire detectors in the home. The Fire Dept. reminds folks they provide detectors free of charge. Chief Hay indicated had the fire occurred earlier while tenants were asleep, severe injury or death could have been the result. The Mayfield Fire Dept. assisted as did Wellington Pollice, Wellington Electric and Public Works, and the Red Cross.
